When the Red Rebellion swept the southern lands of the United Cities, the regular troops faced an unexpected problem. There were too many farmers. Dozens of angry poor people surrounded small groups of samurai, hammering them with numbers and agricultural tools.
By order of the Noble Lords, “Punitive Squads” were formed. A special armor modification was created for them. The blacksmiths added additional layers of high-carbon steel to the standard equipment and expanded shoulder pads that protect the neck from blows from above. Many samurai who wore this armor during the suppression of the uprising suffered back injuries due to its weight, but it was these units that cleared the lands of the United Cities of the rebels. Samurai in this armor did not run to attack. They marched forward slowly and inexorably, like iron walls, withstanding hundreds of blows from homemade axes and picks. They were followed by crossbowmen shooting at the crowd from behind the steel backs of the “Peacekeepers”.
