This situation wore me out, so I’ve created a mod to help. It doesn’t add anything new — these backpacks already exist in the game. However, players couldn’t get them easily; the only way to obtain them was by taking them off a merchant.
The mod adds two backpacks to the shop inventory — these backpacks can only be found worn by certain merchants in the vanilla game. It also changes their stats and icons. No migration is required. All detailed descriptions are below.
To avoid confusing them with the vanilla versions, which remain worn by merchants, I’ve changed the names of the bags added to the shop inventory.
Shopkeepers goods bag – Shopkeeper backpack.
Traders Backpack Large – Backpack trader.
You can buy them at the travel shop (the icon shows a person with a backpack). They appear randomly, just like any other backpacks and goods sold by merchants.
The stats for both backpacks have also been adjusted to make them more realistic. After all, who uses backpacks that weigh 100 kg?
Shopkeepers goods bag – Shopkeeper backpack:
Weight changed from 100 kg to 20 kg.
Stealth changed from 0 to 0,25.
Combat speed changed from 0,5 to 0,8.
Dodge changed from 0 to 0,25.
Encumbrance reduction changed from 0 to 50 %.
The weight isn’t arbitrary: the closest regular backpack — Large Backpack — weighs 8 kg and has a capacity of 20×12 cells. Shopkeepers goods bag has a capacity of 20×20 cells, which means it’s roughly twice as spacious — hence the corresponding weight.
The other stats are taken from the Large Backpack, so the Shopkeeper backpack isn’t overly restrictive in combat. Since the backpack’s stats have been changed, I’ve updated the description to make it more appropriate.
Traders Backpack Large – Backpack trader:
Stealth changed from 0.2 to 0.5.
Combat speed changed from 0.8 to 0.9.
Dodge changed from 0.2 to 0.5.
Penalty to combat skills changed from −10 to −5.

Most of the stats are taken from the Wooden Backpack. I’ve always been annoyed that this is a better backpack but has less capacity than the one that costs 800 kats.
In addition, I didn’t like the backpack’s icon because, in the vanilla version, it doesn’t fit fully in the window. Therefore, the Backpack trader icon is now similar to the Shopkeeper backpack one, but it looks slightly different and has a distinct colour.
Additionally, the Large Backpack icon has been updated. This was done because, like the Traders Backpack Large / Backpack trader, the image didn’t fit fully within the icon window.
Please still keep in mind that these bags are only available for purchase.
If, for any reason, you need the heavy bags or the unmodified versions, you can still take them off vendors as usual.
